Symptoms of headaches, hives or heartburn after consuming certain foods or beverages seem to point to allergies. That’s one possibility. But, a little-recognized culprit may be the cause—histamine.
If it feels like an allergy, looks like an allergy, but doesn’t respond to allergy treatment, it might be histamine intolerance. Many doctors and nutritionists have never heard of it, and it’s difficult to diagnose. But, it’s real.
What are histamines? They’re chemicals made in your immune system that get rid of allergens with inflammation, which is always present when your body senses a threat. So when you come in contact with an allergen, your immune system sends a message to mast cells to release histamine to surround and defeat the allergen. Of course, it’s all more involved than that, but this is a snapshot that leads to the next question.
What is histamine intolerance? Glad you asked that. It’s when histamines do their work but don’t break down afterward like they are supposed to. They build up in your body so the allergy symptoms don’t subside and you’re miserable.
Now, here’s where CBD comes in. In addition to diet, CBD seems to be useful in managing the symptoms of histamine intolerance. A few blogs ago, I talked about the cannabinoid receptors in human brains and bodies. A study in the Journal of Allergy and Immunology shows that taking CBD stimulates the CB1 receptor in our brains to help manage allergies and rashes by reducing histamines and inflammation.
Again, CBD can come to the rescue by stimulating the receptors we already have to produce healing properties. It’s my humble opinion that it’s time for CBD to be recognized for the medicinal powerhouse that it can be if we as a nation just get over the narrow-minded outlook on cannabis. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
