For those reading this blog for the first time I’m going to start this one with some background: the endocannabinoid system already present in every body. If you’re not new to the blog, give me a moment to get everyone up to speed, and then we’ll dive into the benefits.
Here’s the Cliff’s notes version. Throughout our bodies are receptors that can be found in the brain, central nervous system, immune system and other areas. These receptors—CB1 and CB2—make up the endocannibinoid system, which helps maintain homeostasis, or balance, in our bodies. When CBD oil enters the body, or is applied topically, the receptors shuttle CBD’s components where it needs to go to restore balance.
Now, let’s go on and discuss some of the health benefits our bodies can derive from CBD from hemp.
Skin and CBD oil
To begin, hemp is a rich, balanced source for omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. The balance of omega fatty acids is important in keeping your immune system stable. In fact, one of the omega-6 is gamma linoleic acid, an anti-inflammaatory. Eczema and other skin conditions caused by inflammation respond well CBD oil, relieving symptoms and the associated itching. In addition, topical applications of CBD products can strengthen skin and protect it from infection and conditions such as dermatitis, acne, psoriasis and other inflammatory disorders.
CBD and heart health
Again, the omega fatty acids star in helping your heart stay healthy. But, that’s not all. CBD is a known stress reliever, which also can reduce strain on your heart caused by stress. Even more important, however, is its ability to relax and widen blood vessels for a more healthy blood pressure. Inflammation, another factor in heart disease, can be decreased to further stabilize and even strengthen heart function because CBD contains arginine and gamma linoleic acid, both linked to lowered risk for heart disease.
CBD and pain relief
Pain can make your life miserable. Whether it’s joint and muscle pain, back pain, arthritis, neuropathy, nerve pain or any pain caused by inflammation, CBD topicals and oil can take the edge off. It works by dulling the sensation of pain by inhibiting the release of inflammatory agents. Taken internally and applied topically, it gives pain a double whammy, much to the relief of the pain sufferer. Here’s a bonus, there are few, if any, side effects from using CBD to soothe your pain.
Depression and anxiety
CBD is a natural form of therapy for these common mental conditions. If left untreated, both depression and anxiety can affect your quality of life in ways that make it difficult to function. CBD interacts positively with serotonin, found in the brain. In some individuals, the serotonin levels become unbalanced or compromised and depression or anxiety can ensue. CBD, the great balancer, can help promote the proper serotonin function. Finally, CBD oil seems to relieve stress, which can also establish more consistent moods. Once again, the lack of side effects is appealing to those who suffer from anxiety or depression.
CBD and free radicals
Because CBD is an antioxidant, it can calm oxidative stress. What’s that, you ask? It’s brought about by pollution in the environment; high-intensity exercise, or serious lack of it; overprocessed foods; and too much stress, to name a few. Free radicals can damage cells and even mess with your DNA. You can help eliminate, or at least reduce, free radicals with a healthful diet, enough rest and exercise, and other healthful living traits. But that’s not always feasible so antioxidants are your go-to. CBD just happens to fill that bill. Also, free radical damage has been associated with causing cancer, so a little prevention could be worth a pound of cure.
The hemp takeaway
Hemp products whether seeds, oil or topical applications, seem to be worth looking into. But, as I’ve said before, know what you’re getting when you purchase CBD products. Just because something claims to be CBD doesn’t mean it’s a quality, or even good, product.
