Why use CBD skin care topicals? As you may be aware, the chemicals in most cosmetics comprise a toxic soup. There is no regulation on what or how much of these chemicals are used in your lotions, makeup, face creams, et al. The other downside of these cosmetics is that whatever your body doesn’t absorb washes into our water systems.
Having said that, I’d like to introduce an alternative. Topicals carefully developed using CBD, carrier and essential oils, without the chemicals. These products are intentionally designed with synergy in mind. Here is a spoiler alert, if a company adds CBD to a product just to jump on the CBD bandwagon, don’t believe that it’s what I’m trying to outline in this blog. If the components of the product include all the chemicals with some added CBD; well do you see where I’m going here? CBD will not negate the toxic nature of the product.
Why use CBD in skin care?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring component of cannabis. CBD is found in hemp and marijuana. Pure CBD is not psychoactive, so you won’t get high.
Dr. Nima Gharavi, dermatologist and skin cancer surgeon at the Cedars-Sinai Cosmetic Dermatology Program, says, “CBD may play a role in hydrating the skin and have anti-inflammatory effects, so using a product that contains CBD might help with treating dry skin or certain inflammatory skin disorders.” CBD’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can help prevent free-radical damage, which can cause disease and increase the signs of aging.
To understand the part CBD can play in skin care, let’s first look at skin. It’s the largest organ in our bodies. It’s also the frontline of protection from bacteria, chemicals and temperature. It contains secretions that can kill bacteria. It also contains melanin, a pigment that provides protection against ultraviolet rays.
The endocannabinoid system, or ECS, is another factor that gives CBD its punch. The ECS maintains balance in our bodies. Human beings are born with an ECS complete with cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) and many of those receptors are in the skin. Are CBD topicals safe?
If it’s the real deal, in a nutshell, the answer is yes. However, if you have an underlying condition that requires you to take prescription medicine, talk to your doctor. CBD has the potential to affect how your medication works. Learn all you can about the product you want to use and the ingredients in it and discuss with your doctor how it may affect medications you are taking. Usually, a bigger concern for affecting your medications is when CBD is ingested, but it’s better to be safe.
