Although I’ve written blogs about CBD in general and what to look for, I haven’t discussed Lost Remedy products specifically. Now seems like a good time to do that.
Source of our CBD
First and foremost, we walk our talk and use NuLeaf Naturals CBD oil in all of our topical formulas. NuLeaf CBD oil is derived from specially bred therapeutic hemp plants grown on licensed farms in Colorado. The plants used to manufacture the products are grown using organic and sustainable farming practices. NuLeaf uses advanced engineering processes to create premium cannabinoid wellness products with a full spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes. NuLeaf CBD oil is also tested by an external third-party lab.
Each topical product developed by Lost Remedy has been created to address one specific issue. Whether it is joint pain, nerve pain or skin care, we carefully select a combination of carrier and essential oils to target that issue in each formulation.
Chemical-free CBD
If you’ve read the ingredient lists on the Lost Remedy products, you know they are heavy on essential oils. There’s a really good reason for that. Essential oils come from plants, their oils contracted by distillation (using steam or water); expression (also known as cold pressing, a unique feature for citrus peel oils); and extraction, particularly CO2 extraction. These oils have been used for millennia to treat everything from anxiety to aches and pains to acne and more.
Our CBD-infused products use essential oils and carrier oils to enhance the beneficial properties of cannabinoids. Both, when combined with CBD, jump-start the CBD receptors already present in our bodies (See Cannabinoids and You). Combining the essential and carrier oils with CBD make each product most effective.
I know that in many lotions, creams, salves and other topical products, stabilizers such as parabens and formaldehyde are added. These are heavy-duty chemicals and can be toxic. These chemicals are not found in our products. Instead, to preserve our topicals we use a product called optiphen. It’s a liquid, paraben-free and formaldehyde-free preservative used in aqueous formulations and in emulsions. Whenever any form of water is used in a formulation, a preservative must be incorporated to achieve a reasonable shelf life. This is the safest one we have found.
Fragrance-free CBD
You’ll also notice the absence of artificial fragrance from our topicals. Here, too, chemicals abound. Generally the ingredient list for added fragrance is an undisclosed mixture of chemicals, which often includes diethyl phthalate, used to make plastic more flexible. The toxic soup of chemicals that is called fragrance is often associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and potential effects on the reproductive system.
So, now you know why we’re not going down that road. But, what about the essential oils we use? If you are familiar with aromatherapy, you may know that each essential oil has a fragrance that heralds its healing properties.
Take lavender, for instance. On its own, it’s a relaxant; paired with CBD, it heightens the anticonvulsant and anti-inflammatory properties. Argan oil works wonders on nourishing and healing the skin, so it’s an important ingredient in our skin care products. You can see that each oil is chosen with an eye on its healthful qualities, not for making it smell.
Because each essential oil has a unique fragrance, combining several with the CBD and carrier oils (think almond, avocado, etc.) creates a fragrance all its own. Many of our chemical-free products give off an earthy, musky smell that dissipates quickly. So, if you’re not a tree-hugger or woodsy type, never fear, you won’t go around smelling like the backwoods all day.
Finally, it’s also important to note that we don’t test the products on animals. We don’t need to because the ingredients are not the kinds of products that tend to cause reactions.
